Tennessee Just Made It Illegal for an AI to Call Itself Your Therapist — Here's the Law and Why It Took This Long

Tennessee's SB 1580 passed the state Senate 32-0 and House 94-0, and as of July 1, 2026 it's illegal for any AI system to advertise itself as a qualified mental health professional. It's the first law of its kind — not because it restricts what AI can do in a session, but because it restricts what AI is allowed to claim about itself.
